Good Friday provided the perfect opportunity for Grimsby Fish Market to underline its commitment to the community, with more backing for the Mariners.
The team provided the matchball sponsorship for Grimsby Town’s League Two clash with Harrogate Town, building on its long-standing association with the football club.
With Good Friday being the biggest day for fish and chip consumption in the UK calendar, and the pre-match serving of the town’s famous dish as renowned as the attractive football served up at Blundell Park, it appeared the perfect pairing – not least as it fell as the modern market celebrated 30 years of operations.
But, football being football, a fitting 3-0 victory failed to materialise, with a 1-3 reverse the outcome precious few wanted against the relegation-fighting visitors.
Jaze Kabia was awarded Man of the Match, with those involved in his selection happy to take credit for spurring him on for another excellent performance on Easter Monday, with his goal getting Town back to winning ways in Crawley.
Danny Payne and Ben Walker, both promoted to directors of Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises at the start of the season, were presented with the memento of the day – a signed ball in display case – on the pitch at full time.
Danny said: “While the result was disappointing, it was a pleasure to represent Grimsby Fish Market and continue a proud association with the club.
“At least there was a game on Monday to put it right, as they emphatically did, rather than a quickly scheduled reciprocal visit to the 7am shout auction for the squad, as has been known through the years!”
Grimsby Fish Market wishes GTFC all the very best for the promotion push in the coming weeks.
