Grimsby Fish Market has welcomed the UK’s incoming Ambassador to Iceland as part of a fact-finding mission before she takes up the role.
Jane Stevens took in the traditional shout auction and toured the facilities ahead of her appointment in September. She will succeed Dr Bryony Mathew in the vital diplomatic position.
Following her visit, which also saw the HM Ambassador designate to Iceland take in container vessel Skogafoss’ landing into Immingham, and two diverse market users in Alfred Enderby and New England Seafood – representing both a traditional smoke house and huge retail provision in the town – she said: “Strong UK-Iceland trade helps secure a reliable source of high-quality cod and haddock for British businesses and consumers.
“By supporting the supply chain and promoting the quality and provenance of Icelandic seafood, we are backing UK jobs, like at the Grimsby Fish Market, and giving consumers confidence in where their food comes from.”
The Reykjavik posting will be Mrs Stevens’ first ambassadorial role, and first overseas post, following a career in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, handling briefs across European relations, as well as security in Ukraine and the Middle East.
